Dental Implants: Answers to Common Questions

Ron Ames, DMD O'Fallon IL Dental Implant Dentist

Spring Valley Dental Group dentists have been placing dental implants, in one form or another, for over 40 years. But unless you've experienced their use, most know very little about these little wonders. I thought I might take the time to share with you my answers to questions we commonly hear in the office.

1. How will a dental implant benefit my oral health?

Dental Implants are designed to fill in for missing teeth, preserve the jawbone and function as would a normal tooth. By restoring a tooth that feels like your tooth and functions normally is the true key to comfort and improved overall oral health. Some literature I’ve been reading suggests mental function is also positively impacted. Patient satisfaction with implant dentistry is very high, even with the limited risks associated with it. For patients that have dentures this could be a life changing experience. Replacing or securing a denture with implants increases a patients ability to chew and even speak with confidence.

2. How long do implants last?

If properly cared for implants can last the rest of your life with regular checkups and possibly a bite guard.

3. What is your experience with implants?

My initial dental implant training was in 1998. I participated in a 2-year continuing study program. Since that time I've attended numerous American Dental Association certified courses around the United States. Current methods have changed since my first placement so continuing education is paramount to having the most up to date material and techniques.

4. What do you like best about placing dental implants?

Patient Satisfaction!!! Many of our patients feel "born again!" Their ability to chew better, smile more and have the confidence that they have something that will last makes them a popular form of tooth replacement. Many people have said they are amazed at how little post-operative discomfort there is. Implant dentistry is now the standard of care to restore missing teeth.
